CinemaPolitica presents "Between Midnight and the Rooster's Crow" and "Oil on Ice"

Two excellent films that interrogate the problem of oil, the environment, and those who wish to profit from it. This special event is co-sponsored by the CKUT News Collective.

Between Midnight and the Rooster's Crow investigates the operations of the EnCana Corporation, a firm that, despite proud public declarations of its social responsibility, is shown to be answerable for widespread environmental contamination and human rights violations. The film focuses on EnCana's development of a heavy crude oil pipeline from the Amazon across the earthquake-prone Andes to the Pacific coast for export.

Oil on Ice is a one-hour documentary that examines the the battle over oil development within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This is a classic struggle in a stunning place, featuring the dramatic wildlife that adapted to this environment and the cultures of the Gwich’in Athabascan Indians and Inupiat Eskimos that rely on this wildlife for their subsistence. Anti-Hallmark Valentine's Day party! This Valentine’s Day, Head & Hands wants to invite you to come celebrate love in all of its forms. CinemaPolitica presents Dangerous Living and Locks, Chains and a City

Dangerous Living: Coming Out in the Developing World is a feature-length documentary that explores the immense changes that occurred for gays, lesbians and transgender people living in the Global South.

In the last decade of the 20th Century, a new heightened visibility began spreading throughout the developing world and the battles between families, fundamentalist religions, and governments around sexual and gender identity had begun. But in the West, few people knew about this historic social upheaval, until 52 men on Cairo’s Queen Boat discothèque were arrested for crimes of debauchery. That explosive story focused attention to the lives and trials of gay people coming out in the developing world and the film chronicles those events. For more, click here

Lock, Chains and a City is a creative and evocative look at the increasing security measures taken by the residents of San Jose, Costa Rica against a perceived rise in crime in the capital city. The film is a personal essay of the filmmaker's own experience at his parent's house, which - like many other middle to upper class homes in San Jose - begins to look like a barricaded fortress due to one break and entry where a carton of orange juice was stolen and left empty on the driveway.

Through the bundles of razor wire, titanium bars, and alarm systems, we see a society that is continually enclosing themselves in their own prisons in an effort to keep out thieves and other imagined riff raff. For more, click here

CinemaPolitica presents Bus 174

BUS 174 is a careful investigation of the hijack of a bus in Rio, based on an extensive research of stock footage, interviews and official documents.

The hijack took place in June 12, 2000 (Valentines day in Brazil) and was broadcast live for 4 and a half hours. The whole country stopped to watch the drama on TV.

The film tells 2 parallel stories. Not only does it explain the dramatic events that unfolded as the police tried, and failed, to handle the hijack situation; but it also tells the amazing life story of the hijacker, revealing how a typical Rio de Janeiro street kid was transformed into a violent criminal because society systematically denied him any kind of social existence.

Both stories are interwoven in a such a way that they end up explaining why Brazil, and other countries with similar social and economic problems, are so violent.

The film follows a group of activists from Montreal as they make their way across Canada, visiting small communities with Wal-Marts to protest the US company's business practices from Human Rights violations domestically and abroad to the detrimental effect the big box has on small communities from coast to coast.

Czech Dream: This film documents the largest consumer hoax the Czech Republic has ever seen. Filip Remunda and Vit Klusak, two of Eastern Europe's most promising young documentary filmmakers, set out to explore the psychological and manipulative powers of consumerism by creating an ad campaign for something that didn't exist. With a performance from well-know U.S. folk singer DAVID ROVICS, who's music is known throughout the world by those who love the art of using song to voice political and social dissent.

This event will feature a presentation from Kasim Tirmizey of CKUT's Community News Collective, who recently returned from a trip to Argentina and will report on grassroots social movements in Buenos Aires and the massive demonstrations in November against the Free Trade Area of the Americas [FTAA].

Also this event will include the projection of two independent films from Argentina, 'FOR A 6 HOUR WORKDAY' that examines the grassroots labour organizing of transit workers in Argentina, which in 2003 lead to a victory for a six-hour workday and 'Zanon - Constructing Resistance', a film which focuses on the organizing of workers at Latin America's largest ceramics plant which has lead to the workers collective control over the factory.

They lived with the unit 24/7, giving voice to soldiers held under a strict code of authority as they cope with an ambiguous, often lethal environment. $4 billion cut - enough is enough! Rally for a Reinvestment!

Over the past 20 years, the federal government has cut annual funding for higher education by $4 billion, from an historical high of $8 billion. These cuts, most of which were carried out since the mid-nineties, has led to a funding crisis for universities and colleges/CEGEPS across Canada.

The federal government has seen record surpluses over the past few years; there is more than enough money to reinvest in education and ensure there is a dedicated federal transfer of $8 billion for education every year.

The federal party leaders will be in Montreal for the next televised leadership debate. Come out and make sure they hear our voices and recognize that education funding is a priority in Canada!

Cinema Politica presents: Seeds of Change

Seeds of Change is a feature length video documenting the impacts genetically engineered (GE) canola is having on farmers and rural communities in the Canadian Prairies.

Unfortunately, since it's completion in the fall of 2002, the filmmakers who are also researchers at the University of Manitoba have been prevented to screen the film due to ongoing suppression by that academic institution.

Many have speculated that perhaps this may be due to the delicate relationship between the University and Monsanto, a company in the film.

Cinema Politica Presents: Zero Degrees of Separation

If love conquers all, the couples at the center of this potent documentary have got a lot of conquering to do.

Based around a trip director Elle Flanders took back to Israel, where she lived as a child, ZERO focuses on two gay couples who literally span that country's divide.

Selim is a Palestinian who navigates the labyrinthine rules governing his presence in Israel to be with his Jewish lover, Ezra. The activist Ezra takes the filmmaker on a long driving tour of oppression, getting into heated and fearless exchanges along the way with Israeli soldiers, while Selim mournfully attempts to straighten out his legal status.

Meanwhile, Edit confronts her own guilt about being a part of the system that oppresses her Palestinian lover, Samira.

The searing honesty of these romantic realists will quickly dispel any sentimental notions the viewer may have about love in a time of war. The roads these partners travel to be with each other are tricky and full of emotional and physical land mines, and Flanders unflinchingly portrays Israel as a land in decline.

While the mournful tone is emphasized by haunting archival footage of Flanders family in the Holy Land in the 50s, the overall legacy of the film is one of gritty, hard-won hope, scraped out of the broken cement and rubble of occupation.

In what it hopes to be the start of a new annual tradition, Optative Theatrical Laboratories is bringing the spirit of Hallowe’en back by transforming the Plateau, with all its grungy alleyways, streets, bars and parking lots, into a terrifying haunted house where no one is safe from the creatures that lurk in the shadows…

The performance runs between 6:30pm and 10pm, with a new group leaving every 30 minutes.

Cinema Politica presents Being Osama and Shake Hands with the Devil

Being Osama is an intimate exploration of six men with highly diverse backgrounds, interests and personalities, united by their first names and their experiences as Arabs living in Canada in the post-9/11 world.

Shot against the cultural backdrop of Montreal, the film follows the six Osamas from the time of the American invasion of Iraq in March of 2003 to the anti-WTO demonstrations in late July of the same year. Touching on subjects as diverse as Arab names, rock-n-roll, religion, Middle East politics, weddings, funerals and the meaning of identity, Being Osama is a sensitive and thoughtful portrait of six unique individuals and of the new Canada in which they live.

In 100 days - between April 6 and July 16, 1994 - an estimated 800,000 men, women and children were brutally killed in the obscure African country of Rwanda. The victims - many horrifically hacked to death with machetes - were Tutsi, and moderate Hutus who supported them.

One man was tasked by the United Nations with ensuring that peace was maintained in Rwanda - Canadian Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire. But unsupported by U.N. headquarters and its Security Council far away in New York, Dallaire and his handful of soldiers were incapable of stopping the genocide.

Optative Theatrical Laboratories wants you to help save our planet by reclaiming the urban landscape for one day this fall.

After touring the international infringement circuit with stops in Ottawa, Buffalo and New York City, Car Stories is coming home for one more show this year, and we're going green!

Three spectators at a time are invited to witness parked cars transformed from gaz guzzlers into vibrant theatre spaces as they are guided through Montreal's Urban Wonderland in a quest to preserve the nature we still have left.

Car Stories runs Saturday, October 1st between 2:30pm and 7:30pm with a new show every 30 minutes as part of Journee de la Culture-JAM.

Please join us for an evening with Kevin Pina, a Haiti-based journalist, filmmaker and recently released political prisoner. He will be screening his latest documentary film "Haiti: The Untold Story". The film will be followed by a discussion with Kevin Pina and Paul Loulou Chery, the General Coordinator of the Confederation of Haitian Workers (CTH), one of the largest trade union groups in Haiti.

Produced by the Haiti Information Project, "Haiti: The Untold Story" gives" but a small glimpse into recent events in Haiti that tell the untold side of the story." In doing so, it sheds light on the brutal political repression which has been occurring in Haiti since the Feb. 2004 coup d'etat orchestrated by the US and Canadian governments.

As the film reveals, Haiti's poor and non-elite continue to defy the savage violence of police and UN troops, taking to the streets to demand the return of their democratically elected government.

The film also contains exclusive footageof the July 6 2005 UN massacre in Cite Soleil.
